21 Remarkable Attributes of God and Their Meaning

Wrathful is just one of the many attributes of God but, unlike our anger, God’s wrath is never arbitrary or capricious. The Attributes of God are the qualities that describe His nature and character. They are what make Him who He is. The more we learn about God’s Attributes, the more we come to know and love Him.

Here are 21 Remarkable Attributes of God and Their Meaning

Discovering more about these Attributes of God is a surefire way of growing in your relationship with Him.

God is Incomparable:

There is no one like Him. He is unique and supreme in every way.

For this reason You are great, Lord God; for there is no one like You, and there is no God except You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

{2 Samuel 7:22 NASB}

Who is like You among the gods, Lord?
Who is like You, majestic in holiness,
Awesome in praises, working wonders?

{Exodus 15:11 NASB}

God is Invisible:

He cannot be seen with our physical eyes. The Bible tells us that God is a spirit and that spirits do not have physical bodies.

Even though God is invisible, we can experience Him in many ways. We can see His handiwork in the creation around us. We can feel His presence in our hearts. And we can hear His voice speaking to us through the Bible and through other people.

No one has seen God at any time; God the only Son, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him.

{John 1:18 NASB}

God is Inscrutable:

He is beyond our full comprehension. We can never fully understand His ways or His thoughts.

God’s inscrutability can be frustrating at times. We may not always understand why God allows certain things to happen or why He doesn’t answer our prayers the way we want Him to. However, it is important to remember that God is in control of all things and that He is working all things together for our good.

Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is unsearchable.

{Isaiah 40:28 NASB}

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.

{Isaiah 55:8-9 NASB}

God is Love:

God’s love is perfect, unconditional, and everlasting. He loves us even when we are unlovable. He loves us even when we sin against Him. He loves us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us on the cross.

Romans 5:8

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

{1 John 4:8 NASB}

God is Infinite:

He is without limits. God is not limited by space, time, or anything else.

“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!

{1Kings 8:27NASB}

God is Immutable:

He is unchanging. He is always the same, yesterday, today, and forever.

God’s immutability is one of His most important attributes. It is something that we can always count on.

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

{Numbers 23:19 NASB}

“I the Lord do not change.”

{Malachi 3:6 NASB}

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

{Hebrews 13:8 NASB}

God is Holy:

He is perfectly pure and without sin. He is completely separate from evil and all that is unclean.

And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

{Isaiah 6:3 NASB}

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

{1 Peter 1:15-16 NASB}

Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.'”

{Revelation 4:8 NASB}

God’s Wrath:

God’s wrath is never arbitrary or capricious. It is always tempered by His love and mercy.

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

{Romans 1:18 NASB}

God is Omnipotent:

God is all-powerful. There is nothing that God cannot do.

He is also the source of all power, and He can do anything that He wills.

“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”

{Jeremiah 32:17 NASB}

“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?”

{Jeremiah 32:27 NASB}

Abraham had to learn this lesson (Gen. 18:14). Mary, the mother of Jesus, had to learn this lesson (Luke 1:37). Peter and the other disciples had to learn this lesson (18:27). And so do we.

God is Omnipresent:

He is present everywhere at all times. There is no place where God is not.

God’s omnipresence is a source of great comfort and hope for believers. Knowing that God is always with us gives us confidence that He is able to help us in any situation.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

{Psalm 139:7-10 NASB}

God is Omniscient:

He knows everything, past, present, and future. There is nothing that God does not know.

Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I get up;
You understand my thought from far away.
You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, Lord, You know it all.

{Psalm 139:1-4 NASB}

God is Faithful:

He is reliable and trustworthy. He always keeps His promises.

Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who love Him and keep His commandments;

{Deuteronomy 7:9 NASB}

God is Longsuffering:

God is patient and slow to anger, even in the face of our disobedience and rebellion.

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

{2 Peter 3:9 NASB}

God is Eternal:

He has no beginning and no end. He has always existed and will always exist.

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

{1 Timothy 1:17 NASB}

God is Gracious:

He shows mercy and favor to His people, even though they deserve punishment for their sins.

God’s grace is unmerited and undeserved. It is a gift that He gives us freely, out of His love for us.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

{Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB}

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people,

{Titus 2:11NASB}

Salvation is available to everyone because of the Lord Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross (John 3:16–18). However, not all will be saved because some will reject the provision for forgiveness He offers and will bear the full penalty of their sins (John 3:36). Those who remain stubborn and refuse God’s grace will be excluded from salvation because they have chosen disobedience over obedience.

God is Just:

He is fair and righteous in all of His dealings with His creation. He will reward those who do good and punish those who do evil.

But the Lord sits as King forever;
He has established His throne for judgment,
And He will judge the world in righteousness;
He will execute judgment for the peoples fairly.

{Psalm 9:7-8 NASB}

God is the true, eternal King who rules over all. As a result, he executes judgment on the nations, acting with fairness on behalf of the oppressed and the afflicted. He is the champion of those who are persecuted, providing a secure refuge for those who seek him .

God is Truth:

He is always honest and reliable. He cannot lie or deceive. God’s truth is what makes Him a trustworthy and credible God.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.

{John 14:6 NASB}

God is Righteous:

He is perfectly just and fair in all of His dealings. He is the standard of all that is good and right.

For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness;
The upright will see His face.

{Psalm 11:7 NASB}

God made us in His image to have an intimate relationship with Him and to bring Him glory. Since the Lord is holy, He wants us to reflect His righteous ways so others will be drawn to Him in love and repentance. And through His Spirit, He gives us the power and wisdom we need to be His representatives.

God is Foreknowing:

He knows everything that will happen before it happens.

Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My plan will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure.

{Isaiah 46:9-10 NASB}

God is Peace:

He is the ultimate source of peace and tranquility. God’s peace is a powerful force in our lives. It can calm our fears, soothe our anxieties, and give us hope in the midst of difficulty.

For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

{Isaiah 9:6 NASB}

Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.

{John 14:27 NASB}

God is Sovereign:

He is the supreme ruler over all creation. He has all authority and power, and He is in control of all things.

The Lord has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all.

{Psalm 103:19 NASB}

God’s attributes are indeed remarkable and humbling. They remind us that God is a God who is far beyond our comprehension, yet He is also a God who is close to us and loves us deeply.

We can also ask God to help us to grow in our understanding of Him and to reflect His attributes in our own lives daily.
